Celebs That Made It Out The Trailer Park To Hollywood

By molly atherton 7 months ago
With so many movie stars and celebrities keeping it in the family these days - nepotism, amiright? - it's hard to remember that some of them actually came from nothing. And, specifically, trailer parks - or even homelessness. A lot of celebs were living in very dire circumstances before they made it to the glitz and glam of the red carpet. Here are some of the celebs who made it from humble beginnings in the trailer park, to the fame and fortune of Hollywood.

Leighton Meester Was Born In Jail!

Actress and Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester was actually born in jail, after her mother was thrown behind bars for drug smuggling charges! Leighton was then made to live with her grandmother until her mother had finished serving the rest of her time in jail.
That can't have been easy! Leighton managed to get past a difficult beginning (right from the day of her birth, to say the least!) for super stardom. Though Gossip Girl's headband-rocking Blair Waldorf is her biggest known role, she's recently starred in more movies on Netflix, and making her poorer child-self super proud.

Halle Berry Was Broke And Homeless

Hollywood actress and all-time-glam celeb Halle Berry left home at 21 years old to try and find work in New York and fend for herself. Unfortunately, she miscalculated how expensive New York can actually be (who has money at 21 anyway?) - and after her parents didn't bail her out, she ended up living in a homeless shelter to get by!
She apparently didn't speak to her parents for a year after, either... We have to think maybe her parents were trying to teach her something about responsibility if she'd made the rash decision to go to New York without the right amount of cash...

Jim Carrey Called A Van Home

Jim Carrey has to be one of the most successful actors and comedians of our generation, but success wasn't always in his radar. When the actor and comedian was only 12, his father lost his job, leaving the family in a difficult circumstance. Carrey dropped out of school to try and support his family.
Despite Carry trying to find paying jobs, the family still lost their home and had to live in a van! It's a good thing that they even had a van to call home instead of nothing at all - and our respect for Jim has gone through the roof in him trying to provide at such a young age.

Celine Dion Lived In A Tiny House - With 12 Siblings!

Celine Dion is one of the most successful and talented singers in the world, with a voice anybody would recognize anywhere. The legendary singer didn't always have so much money, though, before her fame and fortune - growing up, she was living in a very low income house (a tiny one at that) with 12 other siblings!
Feeding one mouth is hard enough! Dion has labelled her childhood home as a "very, very, very small house"! Though, a very, very, very small house is still a house, right? Which is more than most on this list had... Still, we imagine that got VERY claustrophobic for her.

Shania Twain Was Hungry And Poor

Before she was singing about very much feeling like a woman and wearing iconic leopard print jumpsuits, Shania Twain didn't have it so good. The singer grew up in a very violent household, apparently, which also included her and her siblings being neglected and going hungry.
To make it worse, when she was only 21, her mom and stepdad both died in a car accident, leaving her to fend for her siblings. Luckily, her singing talents started earning her money and she could leave that sort of life behind. Though, with what she went through, that's memories you'll never forget...

Kelly Clarkson Had To Use The Gym Shower

After high school, Kelly Clarkson moved to LA in pursuit of her singing career - but unfortunately before it could happen, her apartment burnt down and she had to live out of her car while using the gym to shower for months. She ended up going on American Idol to try pay the bills - and we all know what happened next!
While she's an example of a 'nobody' becoming a superstar, we didn't quite realize she had it so rough... She's done incredibly well for herself since those days living from her car, and not just with her singing career - also with her own TV talk show these days, too.

Chris Pratt Shared His Van - With Mice!

Before he was Star Lord, and way before his successful acting career, actor Chris Pratt was actually homeless after high school. He ended up going to Maui with a friend, where he couldn't find a place to live, despite how he might have dreamed it would be - so they ended up both living out of a van!
Cozy to say the least (and by that, we mean claustrophobic). Despite it being less than comfortable... he apparently called it, 'living the dream'! This was even when he shared the van with mice, apparently - who no doubt caught a whiff of food Chris had been eating in there.

Demi Moore Was Raised In An Actual Trailer Park

Actress Demi Moore is another huge starlet who wasn't always that way, and struggled in her childhood. Not only was the actress raised in a trailer park, but she was raised by an alcoholic mother and stepfather. She was also relocated a bunch of times which meant she was never one place long enough to make friends.

Britney Spears Call Her Aunt's Trailer Her Home

There are many things we've recently found out about Britney Spears's childhood thanks to her new autobiography, so we now know for definite that her life growing up wasn't glamorous (or rich). It was Britney Spears' aunt who lived in a trailer park, but Spears herself ended up living in her aunt's trailer!
This was due to her parents constant fighting and screaming matches and the atmosphere in her family home. In the end, despite not being able to pay the bills, her parents still tried to support her financially on her quest to become a singer... but that didn't mean problems were over!

Tom Cruise Grew Up In Poverty

Actor Tom Cruise, now a Hollywood action star with a series of Blockbuster films under his belt, had a bully of a father growing up, which eventually lead to his parents' divorce. He then lived in poverty with his single mother having to constantly be on the move to try and find work.
Whilst struggling with poor living, Cruise dropped out of school to try and make it as an actor - and the rest is history! Maybe growing up with nothing made him aim for the best career he could think of that would earn him the most money - and we know how much these actors make don't we...

Most of us have a little insight into Eminem's upbringing thanks to his music lyrics and the movie, 8 Mile. Eminem lived in poverty in a trailer park with his mom and brother - and his rough upbringing is nothing new to fans of his, as the rapper has openly spoke about it in media.
Before Eminem could manage to find a job at the age of 15, they were all evicted from the trailer. Luckily, his fortunes changed! He's now prime example of rags to riches story, and in particular a guy who's worked hard and is talented at what he does. Safe to say, there's only one Eminem in the world!

Star Trek actor and legendary name in Hollywood William Shatner didn't start his 'living long and prospering' part straight away. He may be a successfully known actor now, but did you know Captain Kirk once lived in the back of his truck with a hard shell pulled over him? More shocking is the fact that poverty hit him after his role in Star Trek!
He ended up going through a divorce and losing the money he'd earned. You'd think a fan or a passerby who knew who he was would offer him a better place to stay than his truck, but maybe he kept the covering to hide him from all eyes!

Sam Worthington Lived In His Car

And William Shatner isn't the only celeb who had to make use of his vehicle to live back in the day. Before the success of Avatar and his other movies, Sam Worthington would have to couch surf and live out of his car while trying to find auditions. He also had to sell everything he owned while living in poverty, trying to find his big break.
Despite sounding difficult he actually always thought of himself as something of a nomad anyway! Sure, he said that back then, but we reckon he also isn't complaining about a more permanent home now he's hit the big time! Especially with the sequel release.

He ended up having to live in his car - which was very tiny, by the way - for a whopping six years when he ended up losing his home and needing a place to stay. To make it worse, he's a very tall guy and the car was a Geo Metro! It would be bad enough living in your car even if it was a relatively big one - but we bet he's bought a bigger one since!

Ryan Gosling Lived In A Trailer Park When He Was Young

Ryan Gosling was always well-known, but he seems to be finding more and more success in recent years, especially with the new release of Barbie and more recent Blade Runner. Ryan Gosling not only grew up in poverty, but he was bullied and friendless.
He was the one who had to support his mother and help her with the bills. He managed to catch a break when he acted in the Mickey Mouse Club, though. image source: nickiswift.com
